SHIN SPLINTS

This is a common name for pain in the shin, predominantly the lower third of the shin. Thought to be associated with the origin of one of the flexor muscles which helps to re-supinate (arch) the foot.  Although can also occur anywhere on the shin.


SYMPTOMS

Pain/ discomfort along border of shin

Swelling

Associated flexor tendonitis

Pain increases with activity

Relieved with rest

 

CAUSES

Increase in sporting activity

Increase training intensity

Tibial varum(bow legs)

Heavy pronation


TREATMENT

Rest

Insoles/orthoses

Strapping

Muscle strengthening
